Two weeks ago I was invited to my first #Zomatomeetup which was held at Sponge and Cream Bakery. I was super excited knowing that we were going to decorate cupcakes. Sponge and Cream is run by Paulina, and it’s tucked away in Brixton Village Market. The shop is a kitchen in itself which is pretty cool!
To kick off the evening we each had a slice of Paulina’s home made cakes.
All the cakes had three tiers and were beautifully iced. I opted for the pretty raspberry sandwich cake – layers of chocolate and vanilla sponges sandwiched with raspberry jam and frosting. The sponges were moist and the frosting was light and not overly sweet.
After consuming a slice of the delicious cake it was time to do some cake decorating.
Paulina showed us how to assemble and ice a three tier cake. On this occasion she chose to demonstrate the lemon curd three tiered cake and also gave us the recipe so we could make it at home!
The buttercream was piped around the edge to create a wall for the lemon curd – preventing the filling from leaking.
The centre was filled with home made lemon curd
Paulina repeated this process for the next layer
After that the cake was covered in frosting – Paulina made it look so easy and iced the cake quite quickly!
The cake was then covered with desiccated coconut
Final stage – decorated with slices of lemon
Paulina then moved onto showing us how to make Halloween decorations for the cupcakes. These were all made from fondant icing.
I then attempted to make a witches hat and pumpkin. I’ve never really worked with fondant icing before and I found it hard shaping it – it took me a while to get the shape of the hat to look like a hat!

I really enjoyed the evening and it was great meeting other bloggers. Many thanks to Paulina for looking after us and teaching us how to make Halloween decorations. Keep an eye out as Paulina will be hosting larger workshops next month, don’t miss out on it!
I look forward to my next Zomato meet up!
